Ottawa’s Trudi Le Caine, onetime doyenne of the arts, deserves credit for championing winter skating on the Rideau Canal. A non-skater herself, she’d watched people glide joyously around the outdoor rink at New York’s Rockefeller Plaza, and imagined a similar surface outside the National Arts Centre. Le Caine took the dream to National Capital Commission chair Douglas Fullerton, and in 1971 a stretch of the frozen Rideau waterway was cleared for what is now the capital’s favourite urban winter attraction.
