Gladys Strum was just the fifth female MP ever elected to the House of Commons. A member, and president, of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, forerunner of today’s NDP, she was a strong proponent not just of women’s rights, but also such issues as universal health care and post-Second World War immigration — she encouraged Canada to accept more refugees from Europe and herself adopted 10 children from Czechoslovakia and Spain.
