For several years now, the journalistic shorthand for the chronic torment that afflicts the Palestinian people and their Israeli neighbours has made use of a figure of speech, “the current round of hostilities,” that shows up in a variety of constructions. Sometimes the round is latest, sometimes it’s last, sometimes it’s recent. It’s a kind of euphemism that accounts for unspeakable, unbearable suffering, and I suppose it fulfils a necessary service, semantics-wise.
